It's easy for us to forget that NFL executives are in the elite tier of financial professionals (because, like most elite financial professionals, they're prone to comically disastrous mistakes and groupthink). But if there's one thing the fake-sharp exec suite class is good at, it's copying successful things that the real innovators start. I'd hope that 15 years is enough for guys whose tie clip collections are worth more than my car to figure out the market efficiencies related to the most important part of their job.

What is going to be really fascinating to watch is how this contract changes how the 49ers build the roster. Wll they be big spenders on offensive weapons in free agency to build Purdy up, because they didn’t break the bank to keep him? Or will it be laser focused on drafting and development. They bought themselves flexibility by not breaking the bank on that second QB deal.

I do also think that the successes of Sam Darnold, Geno Smith, and Baker Mayfield showed that the QB middle class is a viable and cheaper option. This reduces your leverage; if the team can get 80% of your production for half the cost or less, a record-breaking extension looks a lot worse.

Darnold only just now reached the middle class, so we will see. Mayfield certainly lines up with the Tua-types.

I was really looking forward to a franchise-crippling contract that chained the 49ers to a good-not-great QB for a decade. This is bullshit.

The idea behind the plank was that it was big but not buoyant enough to hold two people's bodies out of the water. Mythbusters teamed with James Cameron and showed it was plausible.

The biggest issue with the movie is that Rose was _on a freaking lifeboat_ and then jumped back onto the ship to be with Jack. If she had stayed in the boat, she would have been fine and Jack would have had the plank to himself.

NFC North and South? I guess there was a snake draft and you drafted high…and then got the dregs?

"...there’s a chance that Henry’s timing belt snaps in September..."

Clearly the words of someone who's had a belt go kablooey, possibly as an inexperienced driver yet to learn what the heck a timing belt is.

Thankfully, the belt in my first car ('82 K-car!) snapped on Concord Pike in north Wilmington about three blocks from my house and I was able to coast it into a parking lot and walk home.

For someone that spends a lot of words making fun of clickbait, this is obviously that. Look at the headline. Not that the article was bad, I enjoyed it but come on man. I always enjoyed Tanier because he came across as genuine but this is hypocritical on a different level.

Given the abundance of Eagles fans in your subscriber base, I doubt many people would complain about Tush Push content in both podcast and print form. Just saying.

Besides the anti-TP arguments mixed bad-faith statistical reasoning with self-righteous claims of tradition/purity in such a way that the resulting mess seems tailor-made for someone w/ your mix of writerly ability, mathematical skill, and Eagles homerism.

Great essay about contracts, btw.
