Rivers is a Football Outsider from back in the day who covers the Texans (plus lots of general NFL stuff) with a style Too Deep Zone subscribers will recognize. Rivers also offers more DVOA-type insights than I do, for those who want a little more Football Outsiders flavor and analytics.
Matt is a longtime friend who has been a beat writer for the Eagles and Giants, as well as a Philly radio personality. He does a lot of insider reporting these days. Following him is a great way to stay a day or two ahead of the news cycle.
I stopped watching baseball in 1994. Fortunately, Neyer is often writing about events from 1927 or so. His baseball history is more like American history, and he brings to life characters like Mel Ott and Casey Stengel who were pages in the Big Mac encyclopedia when I was a kid.
I read Justin's reporting on the Lions for years, lost touch with him when he went independent, then got to meet him at the NFL Combine. He knows the Lions beat like few others and offers depth and insight that others cannot match!
Joseph Ferraiola, a former Big Data Bowl finalist with a substantial analytics dossier, goes DEEP into NFL stats without giving me the bends. His mid-August breakdown of the new kickoff rule, including hang times and snapshots of alignments, was a real eye-opener about how scouting and analytics and merge using modern tools.
Gregg Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback is alive and well! Gregg was one of the inspirations for Football Outsiders, and he mixes lots of stats and humor into his analysis. He also covers current events and other topics. There would never have been Walkthrough without TMQ!
Ric's an outstanding resource on the nitty-gritty world of lower-level NFL scouting: the obscure all-star games, smaller programs, CFL/UFL landscape and more. He's a boots-on-the-ground insider who brings draft insight from the field, not the DraftTwitter hivemind.
Austin Tedsesco, who acts as the R.A. of the Substack Sports Dorm (or, in my case, the R.N. of the Substack Sports Senior Care Facility) is both talking about sports and talking about talking about sports on a page that's mostly about community building within this new medium. It's worth checking out if you are seeking other independent voices, or are interested in becoming one.
Peter wrote a very personal Mike Tyson retrospective recently which was a total knockout. (Sorry.) His newsletter is an eclectic mix of sportswriting memories and personal memories from someone who (like me) spent lots of time both on the beat and in the classroom.
Ty's the guy who first introduced us to the inner workings of Aaron Rodgers' mind. But don't blame him for it! NFL insights, features and profiles, with lots of Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers coverage.
